Flow forming is an advanced metal forming process used to manufacture high-strength, thin-walled cylindrical components with excellent dimensional accuracy and material efficiency. In this process, a pre-formed blank (typically a thick-walled tube or forged preform) is mounted onto a rotating mandrel, while one or more rollers apply controlled pressure to plastically deform and elongate the material along the mandrel’s axis. As the material flows under compressive forces, its wall thickness is reduced and its mechanical properties are enhanced through work hardening and refined grain structure. Flow forming is capable of producing seamless tubes, rocket motor cases, artillery shell bodies, pressure vessels, and other precision cylindrical parts.
